Team Serbia to jump out of airplane on successful title defence at 2011 Davis Cup – Tennis News
Top seed, Team Serbia in all its eccentricity has made another outrageously bold decision for their win at the 2011 Davis Cup this year. The team has decided to jump out of an airplane should they win the event.
Characterized by eccentricity almost always, Serbian players have always been the bold adventurers on and off court. Whether it is Novak Djokovic mimicking Maria Sharapova, Rafael Nadal etc or the same performing alongside compatriot Viktor Troicki a parody of music icon Shakira's popular song "Gypsy" featuring Nadal.
Latest in the series of their eccentricities was what followed their victory at the 2011 Davis Cup in December. Overcome with joy and perhaps gone a bit insane, the team decided to shave their heads. The team captain Bogdan Obradovic along with teammates, world number one Djokovic, Troicki, Nenad Zimonjic, Janko Tipsarevic and Ilija Bozoljac all shaved their heads. Though normal it may be in most parts of the world, shaving ones head in the bitter cold of Serbia is definitely out of the ordinary.
Determined to repeat the outrageousness of their last decision, the team has definitely outdone themselves with their latest decision to jump out of an aircraft. The news was confirmed after a seemingly excited Tipsarevic tweeted it on the site, Twitter.com.
The Serb's tweet said, "THE DECISION IS MADE....IF WE WIN DC THIS YEAR, ALL TEAM IS JUMPING FROM AN AIRPLANE!!!!SRBIJAAA!!!! "With so many exclamation points and the uppercase, the Serbs are definitely solid in their resolution.
Defending champions at the event, Serbia won its first ever Davis Cup last year in December after thrashing Team France courtesy two straight sets win by Djokovic in his rubbers against Gael Monfils and Gilles Simon.
Serbia continues its title defence at the event this week as they take on Team Sweden in the quarterfinal round in Halmstad Arena in Halmstad, Sweden. Although the Swedes have the home court advantage, the absence of their top ranked Robin Soderling and their highest ranked player, Michael Rydersterdt ranked 297th in the world, makes this weekend an inconvenient stopover for the Serbian Team rather than any real challenge. The presence of world number one in their team, only adds to the Serbian Team's advantages.
The Serbian team had earlier played Team India in the first round where they secured an impressive 4-1 lead. The only loss that had come their way was Troicki losing the first rubber to Rohan Bopanna in a gruelling five setter.
A win in the quarterfinals will put Team Serbia against either fifth seed, Team Argentina, or Team Kazakhstan in the semi-final later in the year.
